The History of Wilmington
Wilmington was named after the Prime Minister, Spencer Compton in 1739, who was the Earl of Wilmington at the time. Wilmington officially became a city in 1866 and remained the largest town of the state until the early 1900's. It also had the world's largest continuous railroad track, the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad.
